An opaque variety of quartz in black or with black and white bands that are almost straight. The most commonly used onyx in the jewelry world is “jet” black, which was highly regarded by the Egyptians.

DID YOU KNOW THAT...?
A large amount of onyx has been produced by submerging agate in a sugar solution, and then heating it in sulfuric acid to carbonize the sugar particles. Its name comes from Greek and means “nail,” perhaps due to its weak transparency.
