Rolex and The Open: the world’s oldest golf major

Traditionally held in the United Kingdom during the third week of July, The Open is the fourth and final tournament in the men’s annual Majors circuit. It was first held in 1860 and the tournament takes place each year at a historic golf course in the United Kingdom.

Rolex and The Open

The Open is a golf tournament that rotates among a selection of very demanding golf courses in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The 2022 tournament, which celebrates its 150th anniversary, will be held at what many consider to be the cradle of golf, and an institution of this sport, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

The courses selected by The Open pose a challenge to golfers. By tradition, each course must be located by the sea, with sandy soil and few water hazards or trees. Due to the particularly unpredictable nature of weather conditions, the 156 players competing in the tournament every year need their share of fighting spirit, self-control and humility, due to the possibility of heavy rainstorms, strong gusts of wind and even heatwaves. The same spirit that is behind every new detail incorporated into the new Rolex models.

Rolex and Golf: Together for More than Half a Century

Rolex’s cooperation with golf began in 1967, when golfer Arnold Palmer, who, along with Gary Player and Jack Niklaus, formed part of the “Three Greatest” golfers of their era and became the first Rolex Testimonee from this sport. When it comes to associating with Testimonees and institutions, the brand has always been proud to forge alliances with people and entities that share the same values.

Rolex enjoys a privileged relationship with golf, based precisely on the following shared values: respect for tradition, responsibility, technical precision, the elegance of movement, the perpetual quest for excellence and a commitment to future generations.

This collaboration between Rolex and golf has been consolidating and expanding over time. Today, Rolex is a very important partner of the sport’s governing bodies and world rankings, the greatest names in international golf, the circuits and Major tournaments, both men’s and women’s, professional and amateur, at the senior and junior levels.

In addition, golf greats are also Rolex Testimonees, several of whom are winners of The Open: Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.

Without a doubt, Rolex has become the reference watch of world golf.
